Andrew Smith, Jr. Blackcat Fight Heart Award
Travis had the honor of being presented with the Andrew Smith, Jr. Blackcat Fight Heart Award at the All-Sports Banquet last Monday, May 4, 2009. Andrew Smith was an awesome individual with a strong sense of leadership, great character and a big heart. Smith led the Blackcats to a state championship season in 2000 and, while playing on scholarship, took UNT's Mean Green to an undefeated conference title and New Orleans Bowl victory as a redshirt freshman. Smith passed for 1,206 yards that season and led the team to a 24-19 win over Cincinnati in the team's first bowl victory since 1946.

Cats rout Sweeny 34-17 in first half
By Justin Daily

BAY CITY – The Cats did everything right in the first quarter and built up a 21-0 edge that Sweeny never recovered from. Bay City won 34-17 and was done scoring midway through the second quarter.
The game soured on the Blackcats late in the second quarter; the offense stumbled, the defense gave up big plays and the team was hit with more than 130 yards in penalties. Bay City had six personal fouls and an unsportsmanlike conduct flag.
Sweeny couldn’t get an inch on the Blackcats in the first quarter. Bay City’s defense swarmed the Bulldogs on the opening drive. They gave up one first down before the Cats forced them to punt after Edan lost 18 yards. Shaun White was in on two sacks, with help from Jonathan Schneider on one of them.
The Blackcats went back to practicing good clock control and burned most of the first quarter on their first and most successful offensive drive. Tomek connected with Robert Taylor on a 33-yard route off the bat and carries from LeTevin Wilcox and Godwin Wyche took it 54 yards for a score. Wilcox punched it in from the one with 4:28 to play in the first. Tomek completed a pass to Rafael Olide on a PAT fake for two points.
BC’s Logan Barton recovered a fumble on kickoff on the Sweeny 22-yard line, where the Blackcats took over. Tomek hit Taylor again on at the one-yard line then connected with Bruce Taylor in the end zone. The TD was called back on an ineligible receiver call and Wyche ran it in from the two-yard line with 3:14 on the clock in the first. Taylor Brown kicked the PAT.
The Cats kicked off again and, after two downs, White and Stoney Davis made a crushing tackle that forced a fumble. White picked it up and carried it back to the eight-yard line. Wilcox scored another one-yarder with 1:30 left in the first.
Davis showed up again on the Cats’ next defensive stand, batting down a Sweeny pass in spectacular fashion. Bay City blocked the Bulldogs’ punt and recovered it on the Sweeny 11-yard line.
Wyche went around the right end twice for four yards and Tomek hit Jarvis Griggs to score with 10:41 to play in the half. Brown missed his second PAT of the night and BC took a 27-0 lead.
Sweeny’s Jarnell Woodard got out for a big run in the second, driving down inside the Blackcats’ 15. The Bulldogs settled for a field goal from Chris Wilson with 9:30 on the clock.
BC answered with a drive sustained by Tomek’s arm. The Cats couldn’t get anywhere on the ground and the drive seemed to stall twice, but big passes on third down, once to Barton for 20 yards and once to Tommy Singletary to score, put the Cats in the end zone. Singletary pulled down a 55-yard pass with 5:10 remaining in the half for BC’s final scored. Brown was good on the kick and Bay City led 34-3.
Bay City recovered and onside kick following the score, but the drive stalled this time and Derek Montgomery booted a 46-yard punt to Sweeny’s five-yard line.
The Bulldogs scored on a 10-yard pass from Ryan Hornback to Woodard, who made the catch after Davis deflected it. The PAT attempt was blocked.
The Bulldogs put it into the end zone again in the fourth and converted for two, trimming the margin to 34-17.

Turnovers and penalties cost Blackcats

Troy Ruiz’s 2-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the game gave the Cuero Gobblers, ranked No. 4 in the latest Associated Press 3A Poll, the game-winner in a gut-wrenching 26-21 win over Bay City.
The winning drive started when Blackcat backup quarterback Tommy Singletary fumbled at his own 41 yard with 1:52 left in the game. It looked like Bay City was in the driver’s seat to run clock and make Cuero use their three time outs, however, Singletary was stripped as he tried to gain extra yardage on first down, giving Cuero one more chance and the eventual win.
The Gobblers used good clock management and costly penalties by the Blackcats. A pass interference call on Singletary in the end zone with less than a minute left, followed by a dead ball, unsportsmanlike conduct call put Cuero at the three yard line.
Bay City took their first lead of the game when Le’Tevin Wilcox broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run on 4th and 2 from his own 45 with 5:17 left to make it 21-14.
Cuero quickly answered with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with a five-yard TD run from Brent Johnson to make it 21-20. However, Bay City called a timeout to ice the kicker and it seemed to work as Jake Moeller shanked his straight-on attempt wide right.
Both teams traded possessions to start the second half. On Cuero’s second possession, the Gobblers drove 42 yards before the stingy Blackcat defense sacked Arndt on 4th and 10 at the Blackcat 30.
Bay City went three and out before Montgomery’s 39-yard punt pinned Cuero at their own 13 with just under 2 minutes left in the third quarter.
On Cuero’s next possession Bay City forced a three and out and got the ball back at their own 39 yard line with 17 seconds left in the third.
Bay City finally recorded their first, first down of the second half at the 11:20 mark of the fourth quarter when Tomek boot-legged to his right and found Godwin Wyche on an eight-yard pass.
Three plays later Tomek threw a short pass to Wyche who took it 23 yards to the Gobbler 13.
On a pivotal 3rd and 8, Wilcox ran it to the 1 before he took it in for the TD on the next play. Brown’s kick made it 14-14 with 8:33 left to play.
Cuero scored first after taking over at the Blackcat 46 as a result of a blocked punt. Jake Rangnow rumbled in from four yards out with 1:51 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0.
With 1:44 left in the first, a 24-yard pass from Tomek to Godwin Wyche put the Blackcats at midfield. However, two plays later Tomek’s pass sailed high and into the hands of the Gobbler’s Rangnow to give Cuero the ball at their own 49.
Five plays later Bay City’s Le’Darion Stone stripped a Cuero running back and recovered the fumble at the Bay City 36.
The Bay City drive stalled due to a holding penalty, and Derek Montgomery’s 27-yard punt gave the Gobblers the ball at their own 32.
The Gobblers took over 3 minutes off the clock before a stiff Blackcat defense forced the Gobblers into passing downs. Stoney Davis blocked a 3rd down attempt and held on 4th down as. Bay City took over at its own 20, but another costly personal foul penalty moved the Blackcats back to their own 8.
On the next play, Tomek hooked up with Singletary for a 51-yard pass. A play later Wilcox ran 16 tough yards for another first down. A short run and a block in the back penalty forced the Blackcats into a long passing downs, but on third down and 17, Tomek found Robert Taylor wide open in the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-7, after Brown’s PAT with 1:20 left in the first half.
The Gobblers wasted no time driving 87 yards in seven plays before Tyler Arndt found Robert Armstrong in the endzone for a 31-yard TD with 9 seconds left in the half to make it 14-7.
Bay City will complete their non-district schedule when they host Sweeny Friday in a homecoming game.

BLACKCAT FOOTBALL
Cats bring down Yates 28-7
By Justin Daily
Bay City Tribune
Published September 6, 2008
BAY CITY – Bay City’s defense looked like a new unit tonight in Memorial Stadium as they as they hit Yates for three fumbles and a strip to run away with a 28-7 win.
Head coach Robert Blackmon got the first win of his career by making the right adjustments and fixing the major problems from last week’s 35-7 loss to Dayton.
“The defense cut down mistakes, we kept it simple and it was the defense that made the difference tonight,” Blackmon said.
“We knew from the film the offense could move the ball and we tried to minimize that.”
Yards after contact wasn’t an issue this week and the defense swarmed the ball and gave Yates all kinds of grief. Jonathan Schneider was back at linebacker for the first time this year after a knee injury and opened the night with a defensive touchdown after returning a fumbled punt snap for a touchdown.
The defense followed that with a blocked field goal and recovered another fumble, this time on the Lions five-yard line to set up another score.
Travis Tomek came up with a stripped ball to set the Blackcats up on the 15-yard line and they scored again before the half to lead 21-7.
The offense struggled to get things going and the defense set them up on the five, then the 15 for scores in the first half. Tomek and Company put together a solid drive in the fourth, utilizing Bay City’s multi-faceted rushing attack with LeTevin Wilcox, Cortney Finney, Godwin Wyche, Tarvoris Mack and Tommy Singletary taking carries. An 18-play drive covered 87 yards and ate 10 minutes off the clock. Wilcox finally punched it in from the one-yard line with 4:40 left to play.
If the Blackcats can play that type of defense every night, and give the offense time to come along, Blackmon could be looking at an excellent starting season.
“We came out energetic. We said before the game that we were going to leave here 1-1. We couldn’t get things going last week, but we practiced hard and practiced our butts off,” said linebacker Iris Norris.
“And it was a home game too. We gotta keep the tradition alive.”

Bay City Blackcats win double-header
Junior Travis Tomek hurls the ball in the first inning for the Bay City Blackcats as the Blackcats edged the Dickinson Gators 4-3 on Friday, May 2, at Clute in game one.
ROSS CUNNINGHAM - Matagorda Advocate
May 08, 2008 - 3:23 p.m.
The Bay City Blackcats edged the Dickinson Gators 4-3 with a game winning single by Travis Tomek in the bottom of the seventh inning as Trevor Seidel stepped on home plate on Friday, May 2, at Brazoswood High School in Clute. Seidel hit the game winner with the bases loaded and only one out to win the first game in the playoff series.
One of the other heroes of the game was Bay City catcher Chance Leissner who tagged out two Gator base runners at the plate in the seventh inning. The Gators started their rally in the top of the seventh inning trailing Bay City 3-2. Lead off batter Justin Audrey started the comeback for Dickinson with a lead off single. Robert Ruffin took first base on an overthrow that went into the dugout giving each runner an additional base with runners on second and third base. Logan Cary tied the game at 3-all for the Gators with a single to left field. Chris Myers followed with a ground ball to third baseman Chad Barrett who threw the ball to Leissner at the plate for the second out. Tim Pitkin singled to centerfield but a rifle throws by Travis Tomek to Leissner nipped the base runner at the plate to end the inning tied at 3-all.
The Blackcats scored first in the contest in the top of the third inning. Colby Hines opened the game with a lead off triple down the right field line. Zach Benson walked and stole second base for the Blackcats after Tomek went down swinging. Hines scored the first run on a wild pitch and Benson ran to third base. Leissner followed with an RBI single to left field for a 2-0 Bay City lead. Tomek retired all three Gator batters to end the inning for Dickinson in the top of the second inning and also stopped the Gators in the third inning as Bay City led after three innings 2-0.
Bay City had an opportunity to score in the third inning with the bases loaded but couldn’t get a hit as Derek Montgomery popped out and Seidel went down swinging to end the inning. The Gators finally got on the board in the fourth inning to cut the lead in half as Ray Whitley doubled to score Myers from second who singled earlier to start the inning. The Gators tied the game on a wild pitch as the runners advanced. Austin Audrey followed with a walk. Myers was caught off the bag at third base and tagged out in the run down to end the inning at the plate by Leissner for Bay City to keep the game tied at 2-all.
Bay City started a late rally with two outs in the fifth inning with Montgomery taking the lead with a walk, Seidel singled and Barrett followed with a walk to load the bases. The Gators bobbled the ball on a routine grounder scoring Montgomery from third for a 3-2 Bay City lead. Shaun Rutherford relieved Tomek as pitcher for the Blackcats in the sixth inning and only allowed one hit, fanned two batters and had a ground out to end the inning. The Gators tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Myers. The defensive player of the game for the Advocate went to Chance Leissner for his play at the plate. The Blackcats rolled past Dickinson Friday, sweeping the bi-district series at Brazoswood to face Barbers Hill in area playoffs.
Bay City won the double-header event 4-3 and 5-1 and kept the pitching arms rested on Saturday. The Cats will play Barbers Hill in a best-of-three series starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8 at Manvel High School in Alvin.
They’ll play game two at 7 p.m. Friday, May 9 and, if needed, the third game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
The Cats scored early and often in both games against Dickinson and gave up little ground in either game, but Bay City nearly gave it up in the first one.
Colby Hines tripled in the bottom of the second and came home on a passed ball with Chance Leissner at bat. Leissner dinked one to the shortstop and Zach Benson, with a big lead off third, headed home. Dickinson went for the play at the plate and Benson came in under catcher Robert Ruffins’ glove for a two-run lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Gators tied it. A leadoff single from Christopher Myers had a leadoff single followed by a hit batter and a double to the centerfield fence from Sencion Barajaz plated a run and Barajaz came in on a passed ball before BC starter Travis Tomek fanned a batter and the Cats turned a double play to turn over the side.
Bay City loaded the bags in the fifth off a couple walks and a base hit from Derek Montgomery, who came home on a fielding error.
The Blackats gave up a tying run in the top of the seventh. Austin Ardrey single in the first base gap then a throwing error on Ruffins’ bunt put runners on second and third. Logan Cary burned one up to left field for an RBI.
BC got the second out at home on a chopper to third that Chad Barrett snagged and fired to Leissner behind the plate. With Cary on third, the catcher lobbed over the pitcher’s head back to the mound and shortstop Zach Benson was waiting on it. He scooped it on the run and hurled it back to Leissner, who tagged Cary in the baseline for the third out.
Dickinson pitcher Cody Herrell walked the first batter in the bottom of the seventh and hit the next one. D.J. Dominguez bunted to advance the runners and Hines was walked to load the bags. Tomek’s line drive to centerfield scored the winning run.
The Blackcats were up by four runs by the fourth inning of the second game and built at 5-0 edge by the end of the sixth.
Dickinson started a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh with two hits after a walk. Barajaz knocked one high into center field for an RBI and Ardrey followed with a similar hit to right field. Travis Tomek came out of center and fired a bullet to Leissner, who made the play at home for the final out.
Zach Benson pitched seven innings with a strikeout in every inning.
