Junior Colby Hines hit the winning run in for the Bay City Blackcats in the Bottom of the seventh inning, as he smashed a single to right field as pinch runner senior Fred Hawkins scored from second. Bay City defeated Foster Falcons 6-5 on Thursday, March 20, at Bay City and improved to 4-1 in District 24-4A while Foster dropped to 3-2. Junior Trevor Seidel opened the inning with a single and Hawkins came in to run for him on the bases. Dominguez hit a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Hawkins to second base to set up the winning run.
Foster scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Wade Konvicka opened the inning with a single to center field and stole second base for the Falcons. Ryan Smith followed with a deep hit to centerfield but junior Travis Tomek caught the ball in front of the wall for Bay City for the first out. Caleb Stokes moved the runner to third on a fielder’s choice for Foster and then Konvicka scored on a wild pitch as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead after two innings.
The Blackcats senior Shaun Rutherford fanned two batters and had another ground out to retire Foster in the third inning.
Bay City tied the game at one all in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Derek Montgomery opened the inning with an infield hit and reached second on a sacrificed bunt by junior Trevor Seidel. Montgomery moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by sophomore D.J. Dominguez. Both teams went 1-2-3 and out in the fourth inning. The Blackcats took the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI double by senior Chad Barrett down the left field line that scored Rutherford who had walked earlier.
Foster answered back in the top of the sixth inning by scoring four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Khail Hayes opened the inning with a single and took second base on a sacrifice fly. Trace Cryer tied the game at 2-2 with a RBI triple for the Falcons and Joey Schevrich singled and scored Cryer from third for a 3-2 Foster advantage. Ryan Torrez singled and both runners moved up on a fielding error. Senior Zach Benson relieves Rutherford as pitcher for Bay City. The Falcons scored two more runs on wild pitches and Konvicka reached first on a called third strike passed ball. Smith hit a bloop single to right field and stole second base to place runners at third and second base. Benson fanned the next two batters for the Blackcats to retire the side.
Hines opened the first inning for Bay City by reaching first base on an error and then took second base on a wild pitch. Tomek followed with an RBI double to narrow the gap for Bay City to 5-3. Benson doubled to left field scoring Tomek for Bay City and Narrowed Fosters lead to 5-4. Junior Chance Leissner and Rutherford walked to load the bases and Benson scored to tie the game at 5-all on a wild pitch. The Blackcats next game will be at Rosenberg against Lamar Consolidated Mustangs at 7 p.m.
