The Katy Seven Lakes Spartans edged the Bay City Blackcats 1-0 in a pitching duel on Friday, April 11, at Bay City. Luke Clements hit a game winning solo homerun in the fifth inning for the visiting Spartans. Zach Benson fanned five batters, allowed only one run and six hits in the loss to Seven Lakes while winning pitcher Zack Voss pitched a three hit shutout for the win. With the loss, Bay City dropped into a tie with the Foster Falcons at 7-4 in District 24-4A and Seven Lakes improved to 6-5 with four games remaining.
Voss had the first hit of the game for the Spartans in the first inning but Benson retired the next batter on a groundout for Bay City to end the inning. Bay City had a chance to take the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Benson reached first base on a fielding error with two outs and went to second and third base on two wild pitches for the Blackcats. Shaun Rutherford and Chance Leissner walked to load the bases for Bay City but the inning came to an end on a ground out by Chad Barrett.
Bay City had another opportunity in the third inning to get on the boards as Benson singled and stole second base to move into scoring position with two outs. Rutherford walked to keep the rally alive but Leissner popped up to end the inning for the Blackcats. In the fourth inning Barrett placed down a perfect bunt single to open the inning for Bay City. Derek Montgomery pop up for the first out followed by a walk by Trevor Seidel to place runners at first and second but Angel Dominguez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The only run of the game came in the fifth inning as Clements hit the third pitch he faced over the left field wall for a 1-0 Spartan lead. Bay City had one more chance to tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning as Colby Hines started the inning off with an infield hit as he touched the bag ahead of the throw from third base. Travis Tomek sacrificed the runner to second base on a ground out. Hines took third base on a wild pitch and Benson was called out on strikes on a controversial call for the second out and Rutherford ground out to end the inning for Bay City. The Blackcats will travel to Rosenberg on Friday, April 18, to play the Terry Rangers.
